2024 Photography Year in Review

2024 Photography Year in Review

Another year comes to a close and I realize that I’ve been terrible at updating my website with content. Hopefully, that will change for 2025, but at least I have a ton of great photos to share here in this Year in Review post. Once again, I’ve separated this into different subjects rather than going chronologically. You’ll find a nice mix of photos here from my Nikon Z8, Fujifilm X100VI, and iPhone 15 Pro.

NOTE: All of the photos below have been compressed a bit to save on page load times. For the full, maximum quality photos, you can see them all here in this gallery.

Alaska

A family trip on an Alaska cruise was the big event of the year. Going from Seattle, to Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, Ketchikan, Victoria, and finally back to Seattle, the cruise took a full 7 days I filled each day with a ton of photos. I had a great time seeing everything, including my first time seeing and photographing humpback whales. Glacier Bay was amazing too and I have a ton of photos to go back to and process. I highly recommend this type of trip for anyone who loves capturing landscapes and wildlife.

Aurora Borealis

Finally, I’m able to cross this one off my bucket list! Since I was a kid, I wanted to see the Aurora Borealis with my own eyes and in May, we were lucky enough in the Seattle area to not only have the Northern Lights extend down to us, but also have super clear skies to see them! It was still pretty dim for naked eyes given all the city light pollution, but the longer exposure from my cameras was able to bring out all the colors. I still want to see the Aurora Borealis on a pitch black night in Iceland or somewhere else farther north, but at least I was able to get these from my own home.

Cherry Blossoms

It had been eight years since I last went to the University of Washington campus to shoot the blooming cherry trees. The campus has changed quite a bit and it seemed like everyone figured out my secret time to go take photos with the least number of people around. Nevertheless, it’s always a great sight to see, although I wish the weather wasn’t so gloomy this time around. Thankfully, a few cherry trees across the street from my house had a bit better lighting.

Concerts

I went to a couple big concerts this year: Red Hot Chili Peppers at The Gorge and Foo Fighters at T-Mobile Park. All of these photos were taken with my iPhone 15 Pro, which really proved to be rather impressive. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you!

The Moon

Sometimes, all you have to do is look up and find something spectacular to photograph. The Moon is such a great subject with all its different phases throughout the month. I’m just happy we had enough clear skies in Seattle to break out the camera!

Out and About

I had plenty of opportunities for taking photos of landscapes and places this year, which is always super relaxing for me. I love being able to just take my time, try to capture exactly what I’m seeing, and then sharing it with everyone. The weather just happened to work out great for some of these Seattle shots, while the black and white shots were taken at my workplace that has some really unique lighting situations. There are also a few travel shots thrown in with some photos from up in the air as well as across the mountains overlooking the Columbia River.

People

I didn’t do many portraits this year, but I had some good photos of Harper as Rosie the Riveter and Hailey’s senior photos (along with the rest of the family). I couldn’t go wrong with TeeJ and Mochi either, as well as a Mariners home run action shot thrown in the mix.

Storm Shadow

A new car joined the family this year! I loved my 2015 Audi S3 “Ella” but I felt like it was time for something new, and it just so happened that my friend Paul was interested in buying her. Thus, things just ended up working out and while I test drove a bunch of different cars, I found myself back into an Audi with this RS5 Competition. The “Storm Shadow” name comes from the G.I. Joe ninja dressed all in white. I’m planning on keeping her bone stock, but that doesn’t stop my friends from trying to convince me otherwise. Either way, it’s good to have a new steady car subject to photograph, but strangely enough, this was pretty much the only car I ended up shooting this year.

Watches

By far, the subject I took photos of the most this year were watches. There’s always something new and unique to notice about them, it’s convenient since you can take photos just about anywhere, and they look fantastic from far away or super up-close. I actually ended up buying a new macro lens this year to get even more up close and personal with my watches. They’re a fun subject to shoot and I doubt I’ll stop taking photos of them anytime soon.

See you in 2025

That just about wraps it up! Photography continues to be my primary creative outlet and has become completely necessary to keep myself sane among the rest of my career and busy life. I hope you all have Happy Holidays and please cross your fingers for more regular content updates here in 2025!
